چکیده

ᅳThe Internet address system is about to change into the IPv6 (128 bits) mode from the existing IPv4 (32 bits) mode, as class-based IPv4 addresses are recently being depleted. The transition of the Internet address system into IPv6 not only seems to be a solution to the problem of the lack of address space, but also seems to provide various advantages to Internet users, such as routing efficiency enhancement, security performance improvement, free mobility support, and QoS guarantee. However, replacing the entire IPv4 network, which is the existing Internet telecommunication network infrastructure, with IPv6 all at once will require an enormous amount of cost and time. Therefore, a transition mechanism allowing IPv4 and IPv6 to be used concurrently for a certain period is needed. Currently, the existing technologies for this transition mechanism can be divided into a dual-stack method, tunnelling method, and translation method. Out of these three transition technologies, the tunnelling method is the one in which an IPv6only host/network or a dual-stack host/network can deliver data packets to an IPv6-only host/network through an IPv4 network, which is the existing network infrastructure. The tunnelling method can be largely classified into 6to4, ISATAP, 6RD, Teredo, tunnel broker, and 6PE according to the difference in operation theory and scenario environments in which an individual method can be operated. In this study, telecommunication scenarios using the IPv6 address system exclusively and the 6to4, ISATAP, and 6RD methods were designed for a transition from IPv4 to IPv6, and the data delivery efficiency for each case was measured and analyzed for both UDP and TCP on Linux-based testbeds. The results of this study showed that the 6RD tunnelling method exhibited the highest efficiency for both UDP and TCP.

Performance Evaluation of IPv4/IPv6 Transition Mechanisms

The exhaustion of IPv4 addresses has forced the deployment of the new version of the Internet Protocol (IPv6). However, the migration to the new protocol is done gradually and with the due care for many reasons that include: cost, inclusion of support for IPv6 in existing applications, training of technical staff, lack of web content available over IPv6 from important providers, and obsolete de...

IPv6 rapid deployment on IPv4 infrastructures (6rd) builds upon mechanisms of 6to4 to enable a service provider to rapidly deploy IPv6 unicast service to IPv4 sites to which it provides customer premise equipment. Like 6to4, it utilizes stateless IPv6 in IPv4 encapsulation in order to transit IPv4-only network infrastructure. Unlike 6to4, a 6rd service provider uses an IPv6 prefix of its own in...

Routing Loop Attacks using IPv6 Tunnels

IPv6 is the future network layer protocol for the Internet. Since it is not compatible with its predecessor, some interoperability mechanisms were designed. An important category of these mechanisms is automatic tunnels, which enable IPv6 communication over an IPv4 network without prior configuration. This category includes ISATAP, 6to4 and Teredo. We present a novel class of attacks that explo...

Impact of IPv4-IPv6 Coexistence in Cloud Virtualization Environment

Since January 2011, IPv4 address space has exhausted and IPv6 is taking up the place as successor. Coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 bears problem of incompatibility, as IPv6 and IPv4 headers are different from each other, thus, cannot interoperate with each other directly. The IPv6 transitioning techniques are still not mature, causing hindrance in the deployment of IPv6 and development of next gen...

Performance Analysis and Comparison of 6to4 Relay Implementations

The depletion of the public IPv4 address pool may speed up the deployment of IPv6. The coexistence of the two versions of IP requires some transition mechanisms. One of them is 6to4 which provides a solution for the problem of an IPv6 capable device in an IPv4 only environment. From among the several 6to4 relay implementations, the following ones were selected for testing: sit under Linux, stf ...
